Three gift hampers in wooden crates of different sizes

A gift hamper is one of those presents that almost always hits the mark. With a few quality products, attractive packaging and a little care, you can quickly create a gift that makes an impression. No wonder that especially in December, many people search for gift hamper ideas – for family, friends, neighbours or business clients.

In this guide, we show you how to create a gift hamper in a wooden crate – step by step, from choosing the crate and selecting the contents to packing and shipping. You’ll find ready-made ideas for themed hampers, sample budgets and practical tips to keep bottles upright and jars from clinking together.

We have been making wooden crates since 2016 in our family workshop and see every year before Christmas how many of them become gift hampers. That’s why we’ve gathered everything you need to know before you start packing, all in one place.

Why choose a wooden crate instead of a wicker basket?

A classic gift hamper brings to mind wickerwork and cellophane. That’s still a lovely option, but a wooden crate has several advantages you’ll especially appreciate if you’re including jars, bottles or heavier products.

Sturdy sides and a flat base

A wicker basket tends to give way, and its base is often uneven. A crate made from pine boards has straight, sturdy sides and a solid base – your products stand securely and can be arranged neatly in rows. This makes a big difference when packing wine, liqueur or several jars of preserves.

A gift that lasts for years

After being opened, a wicker basket often ends up in the attic or the bin. A wooden crate gets a second life: as storage for scarves in the hallway, a toy box, a crate for firewood, a bookshelf or a small pantry. The recipient gets two gifts in one – delicious contents and a practical piece of furniture.

Natural, warm look

Few materials suit the festive season as well as wood. Light, sanded pine looks fresh and Scandinavian, while charred crates have a darker colour and pronounced grain, creating a rustic, slightly Alpine effect. Both versions look wonderful with spruce branches, pine cones, linen string and red ribbon.

Easier to pack and carry

The crate doesn’t need assembling – it arrives ready to use, so you can start packing straight away. The rectangular shape makes it easier to arrange your products, and crates with lids close like a box. This makes the hamper easy to transport in the car or send by DHL.

A natural crate with a lid is an elegant base for a hamper with wine, cheese and preserves.

Which crate is suitable for a gift hamper?

The choice of crate depends on three things: how many products you want to include, who the gift is for, and whether the hamper will be shipped. A small crate is enough for a few sweets and a jar of honey, while a full Christmas hamper with wine, cheese and cured meats needs a fair bit of space.

Below you’ll find a handy overview. The number of products depends, of course, on their size – we’re assuming typical jars of 200–300 ml, chocolate bars, packs of biscuits and standard bottles.

With or without a lid?

A crate without a lid shows off the contents immediately – ideal if you’re handing over the hamper in person and want everything to be visible. Simply wrap in cellophane and tie with a ribbon. A crate with a lid, on the other hand, creates a “treasure chest” effect: the recipient lifts the lid and only then sees what you’ve prepared. The lid is also practical for shipping and if the crate is later used for storage.

Natural or charred?

Natural pine is light and delicate and looks great with white, green and pastel shades – ideal for a hamper for mum or grandma or for a tea set. Charred wood is darker and more striking, making it perfect for a gourmet hamper with cured meats, cheese and liqueur, as well as for elegant corporate gifts. You’ll find more models in the categories natural wooden crates and charred wooden crates.

Gift hamper ideas: themed hampers for every occasion

The best gift hamper has a clear theme. Instead of throwing in “a bit of everything”, choose a guiding idea and match the products to it. This makes the gift feel thoughtful, and the recipient will instantly sense that the hamper was put together especially for them.

Festive Christmas hamper

A classic that never gets old. Such a Christmas hamper smells of spices and brings back memories of cosy evenings with family.

  • German gingerbread or homemade biscuits in a linen pouch,
  • winter tea with cloves, orange and cinnamon,
  • plum jam – ideally from a small, local producer,
  • blossom or forest honey,
  • dried mushrooms or poppy seeds for Christmas baking,
  • chocolate with fruit and nuts or nuts in honey,
  • one or two glass baubles or a wooden tree ornament.

A charred crate with a spruce branch and dried orange slices on top suits this set perfectly. Wrap the baubles individually in tissue paper and place them right at the top so nothing crushes them.

Regional gourmet hamper

A hamper with cured meats and cheese is one of the most popular gifts for dad, father-in-law or the boss. Go for regional specialities from Germany – they have their own story and taste especially authentic.

  • Smoked mountain cheese or other regional cheeses,
  • aged hard cheese from a small dairy,
  • salami, air-dried sausage or kabanossi,
  • pâté in a jar, pork dripping with crackling,
  • horseradish, honey mustard, pickled gherkins,
  • a fruit brandy or a regional craft beer,
  • sourdough bread or crunchy crackers.

Remember that cured meats and cheese need to be kept cool. It’s best to prepare such a hamper the day before giving it or add the fresh products just before you leave the house – more on this in the packing section.

Homemade preserves hamper

If you make jam in summer and pickle gherkins in autumn, you already have everything you need for the most personal gift hamper of all. Homemade preserves in pretty jars with handwritten labels mean more than the most expensive delicacies.

  • Strawberry, cherry or blackcurrant jam,
  • pickled gherkins, marinated mushrooms, pepper salad,
  • raspberry juice or syrup,
  • toffees, homemade butter biscuits, shortbread crescents,
  • dried apple rings, homemade granola,
  • a card with the recipe for one of the preserves.

Wine and cheese

Elegant, simple and always a winner. For a wine hamper, choose one or two bottles, two or three cheeses with different characters (e.g. goat’s cheese, blue cheese and mature cheese), fig or cranberry preserve, nuts, grapes or dried fruit and a pack of crackers. A wooden cheese board or corkscrew makes a nice addition.

For such a set, a wine crate 40×40×30 cm is ideal – it offers space for several bottles and extras and can become a home bar after the festive season. You’ll find more models in the wine crates category.

Coffee or tea hamper

A great idea for anyone who starts the day with a cuppa. For a coffee hamper, include two packs of coffee from a local roastery, a hand grinder or hand filter, a flavoured syrup, dark chocolate and cantuccini. The tea version consists of several types of loose tea, a tea strainer, honey, quince preserve and a nice mug. Such a set fits into a small crate and is a sensible choice if you’re on a smaller budget.

Hamper for mum, grandma or for relaxation

This is all about enjoyment and relaxation. You could include a soy candle, bath salts, hand cream, warm socks or a scarf, herbal tea, chocolates and a book. For Mother’s Day, a birthday or anniversary, a light, natural crate with a pastel ribbon is perfect. After opening, the crate can be used for wool, sewing supplies or herbs.

Sweets hamper for children

For St Nicholas’ Day, Easter or under the Christmas tree, put together a small hamper full of treats: gingerbread stars, a chocolate Santa, lollipops, gummy bears, toffees, cocoa and colourful socks. Add a little book or some colouring pencils. The small 30×20×15 cm crate is ideal for children – after the holidays, it becomes a box for building blocks, figures or treasures from walks.

Corporate gift hamper – for staff and clients

A corporate gift hamper is a way to thank your team or clients for the year together. Consistency is key: all hampers should look the same, contain the same items and have matching extras. This makes them easier to assemble, and everyone receives an equivalent gift.

  • Choose a crate model and order the required quantity at once – for larger numbers of hampers, it’s worth contacting us early to discuss the details,
  • prepare a card with your company logo and a short greeting – you can print this yourself on thick paper,
  • choose products with a long shelf life (honey, coffee, tea, chocolate, preserves in jars), as hampers often wait several days before being distributed,
  • consider different preferences – prepare an alcohol-free or meat-free version for some people,
  • plan who will pack and when – with several dozen hampers, it’s a full day’s work.

Charred crates are especially suitable for companies – they look elegant, and the dark wood contrasts nicely with a light card and company colours. A crate with a lid also protects the contents when the hampers are delivered to offices.

Making your own gift hamper – packing step by step

Got your crate and contents? Now comes the best part. How do you create a gift hamper that looks like it came from a delicatessen? Just follow a few simple rules.

Packing a gift hamper – natural wooden crate with wood wool, wine, cellophane and ribbon
Wood wool, cellophane and ribbon – the three most important ingredients for packing a hamper.

Step 1. Prepare the packing material

Packing material lifts up the products, stabilises them and makes the hamper look full. You have several options:

  • Wood wool – natural, fragrant and matches the crate perfectly,
  • Hay – rustic and very Christmassy,
  • Packing paper or crumpled paper – cut into strips or scrunched up, ideal if you don’t have wood wool,
  • Tissue paper – in a colour to match your ribbon, great for delicate sets for mum or grandma,
  • A linen tea towel or small blanket – packing material that’s also part of the gift.

Fill the bottom of the crate to about a third of its height. If the crate is deep, you can first put crumpled paper or a piece of cardboard on the bottom and then spread a layer of decorative wood wool on top – you’ll need less of it, and the effect is the same.

Step 2. Arrange from tall at the back to low at the front

This is the most important design rule. Place the tallest items – bottles, tall jars, coffee packs – at the back along the longer side. Medium-sized products go in the middle, the lowest – chocolate, toffees, small jars – at the front. This way, everything is visible from the front and the whole thing forms attractive “steps”.

Turn the labels to face the viewer. Heavy items go at the bottom, light and delicate ones on top. Finally, fill any gaps with little extras: nuts in a pouch, sweets, a spruce branch or a pine cone.

Step 3. Stabilise bottles and jars

A bottle of wine or liqueur is the heaviest and riskiest item in the hamper. Push it deep into the packing material and pad the sides with rolled-up paper or wood wool so it can’t tip over. Arrange jars so that glass doesn’t touch glass – put a piece of cardboard, a cloth or tightly packed filler between them. A simple test: gently shake the crate. If anything moves or rattles, add more packing material.

Step 4. Cellophane, ribbon and card

Place a crate without a lid in the centre of a large sheet of cellophane, gather the edges above the hamper and tie with a ribbon or jute string. Trim off any excess cellophane with scissors or leave it as a “plume”. A crate with a lid can simply be tied with a ribbon, like a classic parcel.

Tie the card to the ribbon or tuck it at the front among the products. A few handwritten lines are enough – often, this is what the recipient keeps the longest. Place a spruce branch, a cinnamon stick or a dried orange slice on the finished hamper.

Step 5. Think about chilled goods and shelf life

Cheese, cured meats and fresh pastries don’t like warmth. If the hamper needs to wait a few days, put it together with long-life products and add the chilled items at the last minute. Another good solution is to include a pretty “voucher” for the fresh products in the hamper and hand these over separately, straight from the fridge.

Check the best-before dates before packing. A Christmas hamper often sits under the tree until Christmas Eve and is then opened gradually over several days – the products should be good for at least a few more weeks. Don’t place the finished hamper next to radiators, fireplaces or stoves – the chocolate will melt and the cheese will quickly lose its flavour.

Sending a gift hamper – how to protect glass

You can’t always hand over a gift in person. But a gift hamper can be sent safely, as long as you protect the contents well. Most damage is caused by glass – so focus on that.

  • Wrap each bottle and jar individually – in bubble wrap, several layers of paper or kitchen roll. Glass must not touch glass.
  • Pack the crate tightly – when shipping, it’s better to use too much packing material than too little. Nothing should move.
  • Choose a crate with a lid – the lid keeps everything inside. If you use an open crate, cover it with cardboard and tape it down.
  • Pack the crate in a box – a wooden crate alone is not shipping packaging. Place it in a box with padding at the sides and put the cellophane and ribbon in so they don’t get crumpled during transport (or write on the card that it’s the “travel version”).
  • Mark the parcel as fragile and don’t send products that need refrigeration.

We ship your order with DHL directly from our family workshop to anywhere in Germany (delivery time 2–3 working days). The available shipping methods and details can be found on the Shipping & Delivery page.

How much does a gift hamper cost? Sample budgets

Ready-made Christmas hampers from the shop can be quite expensive, and a large part of the price is for packaging and mark-up. If you put the hamper together yourself, you have full control over what goes in and how much you spend. The total cost consists of two parts: the crate and the contents. There are also little extras – packing material, cellophane, ribbon, card – usually between about ten and twenty euros.

The following sets are examples for guidance. Food prices vary by shop and region, so treat them as a starting point.

Hamper for around €25

Base: small crate 30×20×15 cm from €6.90. That leaves about €15–18 for the contents. Include: a jar of honey, a pack of winter tea, gingerbread, toffees, a bar of chocolate and a jar of plum jam. A great gift for neighbours, teachers, colleagues or for St Nicholas’ Day.

Hamper for around €40

Base: crate 35×25×19 cm from €9.90. That leaves about €25–30 for the contents. Include: a bottle of good wine or liqueur, a regional cheese, salami, cranberry preserve, crackers, nuts and chocolate. Parents, siblings or friends will be delighted with such a Christmas hamper.

Hamper for around €80

Base: crate with lid and clasp 50×40×30 cm from €35.90. That leaves about €40–45 for the contents. Include: two bottles of wine, three types of cheese, regional cured meats, pâté, pickled gherkins, honey, coffee from a local roastery and gingerbread. A “top shelf” gift – for the boss, important clients or the whole family for a shared evening. And the lockable crate can later be used for keepsakes or documents.

If you’re not sure what to put inside

Sometimes you don’t know someone well enough to guess their tastes – or you simply don’t have time to put the contents together. Then a simple idea helps: just give the crate as a decorative piece or present a gift card so the recipient can choose a crate that suits their home.

A crate without contents is by no means an “empty” gift. A large, sturdy chest by the fireplace is perfect for blankets on winter evenings, and smaller crates are great as organisers in the kitchen, pantry or bathroom. You can also put a symbolic little something in the crate – a candle, tea, warm socks – and write on the card what the crate could be used for.

The most common mistakes when creating a gift hamper

To finish the practical part, here are a few pitfalls that are easy to fall into – especially if you’re making a hamper for the first time or in the Christmas rush.

  • Crate too small. Products squeezed in by force look messy and jars will clink together. Choose a size up and fill with wood wool instead.
  • No packing material. Products lying flat on the bottom “disappear” in the crate. Packing material lifts them up and makes the hamper look generous.
  • Random contents. A hamper without a theme looks like shopping thrown into a bag. Choose a motif and stick to it.
  • Forgetting shelf life. A short best-before date leads to disappointment after the holidays. Check dates before packing.
  • Chilled goods left in the warm. Add cheese and cured meats last and keep the finished hamper away from radiators and stoves.
  • Alcohol for the wrong person. If you’re not sure whether the recipient drinks alcohol, swap the wine for juice, good coffee or tea.
  • No card. A few heartfelt words make a big difference – don’t skip this step.

Frequently asked questions

How do I create a gift hamper step by step?

Choose a crate that fits the number of products, fill the base with wood wool, hay or paper and arrange the products from tallest at the back to lowest at the front. Stabilise bottles and jars with packing material, wrap everything in cellophane or tie a ribbon around it, and add a card with your greetings.

What goes in a Christmas hamper?

Gingerbread, winter tea, honey, plum jam, dried mushrooms, chocolate with fruit and nuts, as well as cheese, regional cured meats and a fine fruit brandy or craft beer all work well. Baubles, pine cones and spruce branches complete the look. It’s best to choose a guiding theme and match the contents to it.

How much does a gift hamper cost?

That depends on the crate and the contents. You can put together a small hamper in a 30×20×15 cm crate for around €25, a medium one for about €40 and a large hamper in a crate with lid for about €80. Crates from our workshop start at €6.90.

Which crate is suitable for a corporate gift hamper?

Charred crates and models with lids are ideal for corporate hampers – they look elegant and protect the contents during distribution. It’s important that all hampers are the same size. For larger quantities, it’s best to contact us early.

Can you prepare a hamper with cured meats and cheese in advance?

Long-life products – honey, preserves, tea, chocolate – can be packed several days ahead. Cheese and cured meats are best added just before handing over and kept in the fridge until then. Store the finished hamper in a cool place, away from radiators.

Can you send a gift hamper in a crate by DHL?

Yes, but it must be well protected: wrap each bottle and jar individually, pack the crate tightly, close the lid or cover with cardboard and pack everything in a shipping box. Don’t send products that need refrigeration.

Does the crate need to be assembled?

No. Our pine crates arrive ready-made, no assembly required – you can start packing your hamper straight away.

Conclusion – a hamper that lasts

A good gift hamper doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. A thoughtful theme, a few carefully chosen products, some packing material and a sturdy base are all you need. A wooden crate gives the whole thing a natural, warm feel and certainly doesn’t lose its purpose after the festive season – it stays in the home as storage, an organiser or decoration.

Whether you’re preparing a Christmas hamper for your family, a small gift for St Nicholas’ Day or dozens of hampers for your staff and clients, start by matching the crate to the contents. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a look in our shop – every crate is made from pine in our family workshop, so it brings joy long after the last gingerbread has disappeared.
